The Henry George School of San Francisco is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit California Public Benefit Corporation whose purpose is to offer to those interested an education in the principles of political economy based on the writings of the preeminent American social philosopher, Henry George.
Henry George wrote:
"....in attempting the study of political economy, we should first of all, and at every step, make sure of the meaning of the words that we use as its terms, so that when we use the terms they will always have for us the same meaning.
"
"It is only as we attach a common meaning to words that we can communicate with one another by speech. To understand one another with precision, it is necessary that each attach precisely the same meaning to the same word."
"We cannot think with precision unless in our own minds we use words with precision. Failure to do this is a great cause of the generation and the persistence of economic fallacies."
The class in Fundamentals of Economics provides the student with precise meaning to such terms as wealth, money, value, capital, land, labor, rent, interest, and so on, which often vary from the commonly accepted meaning for those words. However, it is absolutely necessary that we use precise meanings to think out any of the problems of today's economy.
Almost all students who have taken a course found that it fundamentally changed their understanding as to how an economy works and what it requires politically to make it work equitably and justly.
All classes are seminar-style discussions and open to any adult
17 years and older. The class in Fundamentals of Economics is a
prerequisite for enrollment in any of the other classes offered
by the Henry George School of San Francisco.
